from The Four Seasons

Brian Romeo participated in The Four Seasons show in Spring/Summer 2017 at Village West.

"Growing up in a household that strongly supported the arts - my mother was an art teacher and my father has always had a love of music - I discovered very early that I had passionate artistic inclinations. I was educated in Edison Township and went on to study at the University of Maryland, completing a Bachelor's Degree in Art Education. I have also taken some post-baccalaureate work at Kean University. Ultimately, I went back to Edison to become an art teacher and have been teaching middle school visual arts classes for 17 years.

I now find myself in another household that is very supportive of the arts, happily married with 2 sons who each have some strong artistic leanings. In the past year and a half, I have been working on my own artwork with more regularity and commitment than ever before. I have been experimenting in many mediums - oil, acrylic, charcoal, ink, graphite as well as digital - and have found great fulfillment in this work.

I enjoy creating series work, often working through a theme in 3 or 4 different drawings or paintings. I find it enjoyable to thoroughly explore not only the topic, but the possibilities and characteristics of each medium. I have always been inspired by the Masters, most specifically Rembrandt and I find truth in this quote by da Vinci: "Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt." I believe he was speaking about a certain economy of essential marks - whether they are brushstrokes or hatched ink. It is the goal to overwhelm the viewer with a feeling or idea, not unnecessary detail."
