Joan Mellon

Homage to Léger's 'Big Julie'

from Under the Influence

Joan Mellon participated in the Under the Influence show in Fall 2016 at Village West.

Mellon is a native New Yorker. She has had one person shows and participated in a number of group exhibitions in NYC and the metropolitan area, throughout the United States and abroad. Her paintings and works on paper are represented in private and public collections including Franklin Furnace Archives at the Museum of Modern Art, Johnson & Johnson, New York Public Library Print Collection and School of Visual Arts.

The physical act of painting is central to Joan's work. She has said, "Painting is pleasure. The process is a kind of dance. For me, the magic of painting happens when, after applying paint and wiping it off, perhaps hundreds of times, there is that moment when - suddenly - the surface that was once inanimate, comes alive."

Joan received her BFA from School of Visual Arts (NYC) and MA in liberal studies from SUNY Empire State College (NYC) where she has been an adjunct mentor.
