Self Portrait with Apologies to Mr. Rembrandt

from Under the Influence

Bruce Hancock participated in the Under the Influence show in Fall 2016 at Village West.

After more than 40 years in design and construction management in both the public and private sector, I set aside my coat and tie, picked up a smock and brush and began to paint. Today, nearly ten years later, I still own a consulting firm in Sacramento, California, but more and more of my time is devoted to the study and practice of fine art painting.

As a fourth generation native Californian, it's only natural that I find endless inspiration here. From the shores of the Pacific coast to the open spaces of the Central Valley and up the foothill slopes of the Gold Country, I try to capture the essence of this beautiful state. I am also drawn to the ancient lands and cultures of the great Southwest. The vast spaces of the Western landscape enthrall and inspire me. Capturing the majesty and the history of the people and places that make up the American West will keep me busy for the rest of my life.

Coming late in life to the easel has presented me with challenges and opportunities in abundance. After the initial excitement of returning to painting again, I began to understand how much I had to learn. To grow as an artist, I regularly study through workshops and studio sessions with gifted artists I admire. I have to admit that I feel the pressure of time. There is so much to learn and to experience and to try. But I understand too that the artist's journey never ends, no matter when in life it started. How blessed I am to have each of these days to create art. Each time I approach the canvas, I am a student all over again, excited, awed, and inspired by life and nature. I trust it will be that way for the rest of my life.
